The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and is endemic to Antarctica. Emperors are the only penguins (or any bird species) in the Antarctic that breeds during the winter. Sadly, today emperor penguins are considered near threatened and their populations are expected to decline rapidly in years to come.
